Crab Orchard group working to involve more women in outdoor hobbies like hunting and fishing

The Artemis Sportswomen Foundation is showing women across East Tennessee the ropes when it comes to hunting, wildlife and the great outdoors.

CRAB ORCHARD, Tenn — A project in Cumberland County is working to get more women involved in hunting, fishing and the outdoors. The project involves offering a 1,700-acre all-women’s hunting lease.

Mary Lynn is the lease manager for the project, through the Artemis Sportswomen Foundation. For about two years, she has been teaching other women the ropes when it comes to hunting, wildlife and the outdoors.

“The girls on the lease can come out and learn how to turkey hunt, if they wanted to squirrel hunt, or if they wanted to try hunting with dogs,” said Lynn.

A grant through the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency helped kickstart the project and secure a hunting lease.

“It has paid for the property itself. We've gotten stands for the girls to be able to put up blinds, we run trail cameras over the property," said Lynn. “Women are actually the largest growing aspect of the sporting industry.”

Not only do the women learn how to hunt and gather, but they also learn how to build campgrounds.

“We've got woodstoves on the inside that we can actually keep the tents warm with," she said. “There are tables and sinks in there. So, it's actually like a fully functioning hunting camp.”

Lynn said it's important for women to also get involved in the outdoors, and she hopes even more women get involved this coming year. To learn more at Artemis Sportswomen, you can visit the website here.
