COVID-19 at UT: 177 active cases, 554 people in quarantine or isolation

The University of Tennessee will no longer post daily COVID-19 data. Information will be posted on Mondays.

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Editor's note: Starting May 10, the University of Tennessee is switching from near-daily data reporting about COVID-19 to weekly updates. Information will be posted every Monday at least for the summer.

As part of the shift announced on April 23, the university is now defining a "cluster" of cases as at least 5 related positive cases.

On Aug. 19, Chancellor Donde Plowman said the COVID-19 briefings will take place every other Thursday.

Active self-isolations are included broken down by date on the report, but that does not mean the self-isolation started on that date. It’s also important to note that self-isolations can happen for a number of reasons and vary in length depending on the person’s circumstances. The graph on the university's website on reasons for self-isolation is important context.

On Aug. 23, the quarantine or self-isolation graph was changed to COVID Support to reflect changes to university procedures, which now provide more varied levels of support—beyond just self-isolation—based on individual circumstances.

The university said the data itself is otherwise unchanged and still represents the number of employees and students who have filled out the university’s form and are actively receiving support.

UT Chancellor Donde Plowman on Thursday held her first campus COVID-19 briefing in many months, saying COVID-19 cases and vaccinations are growing as the semester begins.

While UT has been updating its numbers on Mondays, Plowman said the number of active cases on campus has nearly doubled in the past four days from 40 to 70, saying 50 of those are students and 20 are staff.

Plowman said the university is also seeing a recent uptick in people getting the vaccine. She did not provide overall campus vaccination numbers but said student-athletes have been setting the example with 77% fully vaccinated, saying they expect to see those numbers grow since many are awaiting their second dose.

The university has been holding vaccine clinics on campus to encourage students to receive it, saying it is offering regular drawings for anyone who's vaccinated to receive prizes such as special campus parking passes, a pick-up game at Thompson-Boling Arena, and a chance to watch football from the chancellor's University Suite at Neyland Stadium.

Plowman said the COVID-19 briefings will take place every other Thursday.

UT starting next Monday will update its case counts once a week rather than daily.

April 23

UT administrators will cut back daily virus count updates as of May 10, switching to a weekly update on Mondays, Chancellor Donde Plowman said Friday.

The departure of most students from campus, ongoing vaccination efforts and falling case counts factor in the decision.

As part of its shift in data reporting, UT also will alter the definition of a "cluster" of cases. It now will look for and report at least 5 connected cases as the result of a single event or in one concentrated location, she said. It won't log the "close contacts" of a cluster, as previously recorded.

Plowman's weekly online updates, which have been taking place on Friday mornings, also will stop at least for the coming months. Plowman and other administrators have held the updates since early fall semester as a way to keep the campus community and parents informed.

Dr. Spencer Gregg, director of the Student Health Center, said going forward UT will continue to offer free vaccinations both to the campus community and to the public at large. Vaccines will be available at the health center this summer, and more information is available here.

On-campus saliva pool testing of students ended this week. UT classes end April 28. Graduation ceremonies are planned in May at Neyland Stadium.

In her final update Friday, Plowman said she was looking forward to everyone coming together face-to-face on campus in the fall. The 2020-21 year has been unprecedented in higher education, she said.

"We have been through so much together," she said. "When we came back to campus in August, no one knew what would happen, really."

She congratulated students for mostly complying with testing requirements that helped mitigate the spread of the virus.

Gregg cautioned students Friday to get tested for the virus if they have any suspicions before going home so they don't bring it back to family members. Those who haven't gotten the shot yet also are advised to do so.

As of Friday morning, there were 30 active cases, including 27 students and 3 employees.

There were 78 people in quarantine or self-isolation. The figure consists of 29 students on campus, 35 off and 14 employees.

In the fall, UT had hundreds of students who had to at one time stay in dorms or area motel rooms until they no longer were found to carry the virus.

April 16

UT officials said Friday that while distribution of the Johnson & Johnson shot has been halted for the moment, students can still get a two-shot Moderna vaccine.

The vaccines are available at the Student Health Center on campus.

Even though classes end April 28, students will still be able to get the second shot later this month on campus, said Dr. Spencer Gregg, director of the health center.

There also are distributors throughout communities across Tennessee and the nation if students are leaving campus for the semester.

Officials emphasize that students all need to get a shot to help build herd immunity to ultimately halt the spread of the virus.

Case counts have been trending down in recent weeks, an encouraging sign.

UT officials said, however, that on-campus student compliance with submitting saliva samples has continued to go down. It's now at about 34 percent. Administrators say they want to see at least 75 percent submitting samples so UT can fully track the presence of the virus on campus.

The compliance rate of students submitting saliva samples to track the presence of COVID-19 on campus continues to slip -- now down to 50.8 percent, administrators cautioned Friday.

It's mandatory for anyone living in on-campus Greek or campus dorms to submit regular saliva samples that can be tested.

The prior week the rate was 56 percent.

Provost John Zomchick warned Friday that those who aren't going along with the testing will face consequences.

"That's not acceptable," he said.

UT has loosened visitation rates for on-campus residences that reach a compliance rate of 75 percent.

Dr. Spencer Gregg, director of the Student Health Center, said lower compliance rates weaken confidence that UT has a handle on the presence of the virus.

The rate has been slipping in recent weeks.

Zomchick also said Friday that UT has now confirmed 10 positive cases that emerged when more than 60 students attended a retreat last month in Townsend. He said there also are 74 confirmed close contact cases, making this the largest cluster identified so far in the 2020-21 year at UT.

The large cluster is a reminder, Zomchick said, that everyone needs to follow guidelines to stop the spread of the virus including wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing and gathering only in small social groups.

So far about 5,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine have been distributed on campus to those who qualify, Gregg said.

Another on-campus clinic is planned Friday, March 19, that will feature about 1,100 doses of the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine for those who qualify. It's the first time UT has given that shot out.

You can learn more about how to sign up for a shot on the UT campus here.

"Contact tracing has been completed, and the cooperation of the students is greatly appreciated," spokesman Owen Driskill said in a statement Wednesday.

The cluster occurred Saturday and was discovered Sunday.

It's not related to a cluster UT announced Tuesday, which occurred after some 67 students attended retreat activities in late February in Townsend.

So far 2,981 people in the campus community have recovered from the virus.

On Tuesday, UT Chancellor Donde Plowman provided an update on pooled COVID-19 saliva testing on campus to find potential clusters in residence halls. The university took saliva samples from 574 people at White and Hess Halls.

The samples were pooled in groups of 5, and 21 people have been referred to the student health center for follow-up individual PCR testing.

About 5% of the samples are still being tested. UT said it will take new pooled saliva samples every week for the rest of the semester.

Pooled saliva test will continue every week for rest of semester.

Dr. Deborah Crawford said the results of the saliva testing show students need to be very aware and cautious of any minor symptoms that have this fall and winter and should seek testing, even if they believe it's 'only allergies.'

"These results tell us the virus is pernicious, and that the virus is being spread by people who don't know they have the symptoms or misattribute them to something like allergies," she said.

Chancellor Plowman and Dr. Crawford once again warned students about their high potential for being asymptomatic spreaders. While the virus has not largely been seen to pose the same health risks to young people compared to those who are older, health experts warn that young people with no symptoms can put others in harms way with this virus if they are being reckless and ignoring the risk. They continue to ask everyone to follow the 5 core actions of social distancing to prevent themselves from unknowingly spreading the virus to others more at risk to serious complications.

UT recently conducted pooled saliva testing at two residence halls on campus -- saying it is worried the rapid decrease in cases is not due to fewer students contracting COVID-19, but fewer students seeking out testing for the virus. UT said it should have the results of the pooled tests this week, and will follow up with individual PCR testing depending on the results.
