Gatlinburg hopes to beat world record for largest scarecrow display with initial count of 4,325

Gatlinburg counted 4,325 scarecrows Monday morning.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — There are a few thousand new faces in Gatlinburg this week.

The city is hoping to set a world record for the largest scarecrow display. The current record is held by a small town in England with 3,812.

Gatlinburg counted 4,325 scarecrows Monday morning.

People started counting the scarecrows around 7 a.m. and it took hours to finish counting them. They said they will hear from the Guinness Book of World Records in six to eight weeks on whether they officially broke the record.

Business owners are hoping the scarecrows don't scare away costumers.

"I mean who knew there was a record for the most scarecrows in a town," said Dan Booth, the owner of the Hayloft. "You know, we are just always trying to make something new for the visitor when they come. The little kids are loving the scarecrows."

The people counting the scarecrows Monday morning said they had to record a video of them counting and touching every scarecrow and they will send it to Guinness Book of World Records.
