Senator Lamar Alexander, former Congressman John Duncan and Park Superintendent Cassius Cash will attend the dedication of Dean Stone Bridge, honoring newspaper editor and Park supporter Dean Stone. The ceremony is at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 23.

The bridge is part of a historical section of the Smokies. Congress authorized the Foothills Parkway in 1944 a scenic parkway. The parkway's creators wanted a road that would let people drive past the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and take in its views — all without actually stopping at the park.

Dean Stone Bridge is in the newest section of the Foothills Parkway, which includes a nearly 2-mile section connected by nine bridges. Senator Lamar Alexander and Congressman John Duncan introduced legislation to name the longest of the bridges after Dean Stone.

Stone was a longtime editor for The Daily Times in Maryville, Tennessee. He served for 30 years as a board member and chairman of the Tennessee Park Commission before his death in 2016.
