Sevierville teen's death investigation still open, mom is looking for answers two years later

Breighner died exactly two years ago on Friday and his mother still hopes someone will come forward with information.

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. — If you ask Cheryl Breighner what her son was like, she would tell you he was the kind of kid who knew how to crack a smile.

"He was a very happy person, he liked to make people laugh," she said.

Two years ago on July 15, 2017, Breighner was hit by a car and died.

But Breighner chooses to look at what happened a little bit differently.

"Today is my son's angel day so it means a lot," she said.

It happened on Old Knoxville Highway in Sevier County. Friends and family immediately put up a memorial in the spot where he died, a memorial that grew in the last two years.

"New stuff pops up every now and again," Breighner said. "I wanted it to stick out so that everybody would remember him."

Remembering Cordell is something his mom said should be a community effort. Officials said the investigation is still open and there is nothing new to report.

"I just really would like to know who done this," she said. "Cordell was a really good person and he didn't deserve this, I don't deserve this."

While the pain still lingers Breighner plans to keep waiting, keep pushing and keep Cordell's memory alive along Old Knoxville Highway.

"His favorite color was red and he liked to rap but he wasn't real good at it," Breighner said.

She said maybe with a little more time and little more hope, she'll get the answers she's looking for and the peace she's prayed for.

"I just want to know what happened, some closure would be nice," she said.
