SRO returns home after being hit by vehicle in Cumberland County while directing school traffic

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said the officer had to be airlifted to a hospital for precautionary reasons.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Tenn. — UPDATE Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019

 A school resource officer who was hit by a vehicle on Highway 127 North Tuesday afternoon has returned home to continue his recovery, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. 

"Deputy Sheriff Scott Iles, School Resource Officer at North Cumberland Elementary School in Crossville, is at home this morning recovering," Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Gary Howard said.

His head was injured and he required well over 200 stitches, he had a cracked sternum, and damage to his knee. The sheriff's office said Deputy Iles is in good spirits and is missing his young friends at school.

"He was most appreciative for the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and support he received. Scott is expected to make a full recovery," Howard said.

Charges are pending for an 87-year-old man accused in the crash.

Charges are pending for an 87-year-old man after first responders airlifted a Cumberland County school resource officer to the hospital when he was hit by a vehicle at a crossing.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, SRO Scott Iles with the CCSO was stuck by a vehicle heading south on Highway 127 North around 3:10 p.m. while directing school traffic outside North Cumberland Elementary School.

The CCSO said Iles was injured and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital out of precautionary reasons.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating, saying charges are pending for 87-year-old Patrick Henry Hicks III.

According to THP's preliminary report, Iles was directing traffic when the Hicks' Ford Focus hit him. The report said Iles hit the windshield and landed approximately 50 feet in front of the vehicle.
