As part of the Masterworks series, The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is exploring ideas of ‘A New World,’ from American composer Rachel Grimes to the Czech influence of Antonn Dvok.  The performances are Thursday at Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Theatre.

Theatre Knoxville Downtown’s latest show is ‘On Golden Pond,’ a comedic drama about a retired couple who spends their 48th summer together at their vacation home on Golden Pond. The show runs from January 4 through January 20. Tickets are $15.

The Violins of Hope, a collection of restored violins that were played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust, is in Knoxville. You can see the historic violins at the UT Downtown Gallery on Gay Street

The Alive After Five series continues this week at the Knoxville Museum of Art. The Streamliners Swing Orchestra is performing at 6 p.m. General admission tickets are $15.

Friday is College Night at the Knoxville Ice Bears game against the Huntsville Havoc. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. College students can buy a silver level ticket and receive a t-shirt for $19.98.

The Knoxville Flea Market is at the Knoxville Expo Center this weekend. Hours are 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Knoxville County Public Library is celebrating Dolly Parton’s birthday this Friday with cupcakes, crafts, and story times. There will be parties at 10:30 a.m. at the branches in Powell, Bearden, Fountain City, Halls, and downtown.

Talented young actors and actresses at the Knoxville Children’s Theatre are performing ‘Winnie the Pooh’ January 18 through February 3.  The play, which is passed on the classic novel, features 13 performers who range in age from eight to 16.

The Blount County Public Library is hosting a special sensory showing of the movie, ‘A Wrinkle In Time’ on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.  The sensory environment provides moderate lighting and LEGOs and crafts.

There is also a MLK Kids and Family Fair at the Blount County Public Library on Saturday. The free event runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and includes storytelling, music, crafts, and educational groups.

The University of Tennessee is hosting a violin symposium to allow visitors to experience some of the nation’s top performers in recitals and masterclasses. The free event lasts from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and includes guest artists like Sally Shepherd Perkins, a professor of Violin at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and Jinjoo Cho, the 2014 winner of the Indianapolis International Violin Competition. The symposium is located inside the Natalie Haslam Music Center.

The Calhoun’s 10 Miler, also known as the 2019 RRCA Tennessee State 10 Mile Championship is Saturday in Oak Ridge. The run, which starts and finishes at Calhoun’s in Oak Ridge, begins at 8 a.m. Race day registration costs $35.

Celebrate diversity by racing in the YWCA’s Race Against Racism. The race is part of the organization’s Diversity Day, which includes inspirational speakers, live entertainment, and more.

The University of Tennessee men’s basketball team takes on the University of Alabama on Saturday at Thompson-Boling Arena. The game starts at 2 p.m.

Join Ranger Jammie on the Old Farm Trail in Panther Creek State Park for a guided hike. Hikers will look for signs of the old farms and what animals may be out and about. The hike leaves at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Learn how to weave a market basket at the historic Ramsey House on Saturday. This beginning basket weaving workshop costs $45 and includes all the supplies to make a basket.

The Casual Pint in Hardin Valley is hosting its third annual chili cook-off on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The chili competitors will all have something in common; beer must be included in their recipe.

Central Collective is hosting its monthly mystery event on Saturday. You never know what activity you’ll be doing until you show up at 6 p.m. Tickets to Good Sport Night cost $26.

Have you ever wanted to paint like Bob Ross? Now you can. The Hobby Lobby in Maryville is hosting a painting class that will be led by a certified Bob Ross Instructor. The class lasts from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. No prior experience is necessary, but workshops tend to sell out quickly.

It’s time for Family Adventure Sunday at Ijams Nature Center. This week’s program is called ‘tracking down nature.’ Families will play tracking games to identify animal droppings by using their noses to sniff out clues. The fee for the program is $8 for individuals or $25 for a family.

Build your own hiking stick at a fun workshop at Panther Creek State Park on Sunday.  Guests will use files, rasps, sandpaper, and hammers to make the sticks. The cost for the program is $15 and guests should meet at the Upper Campground Shelter at 3 p.m.

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is partnering with several other arts groups to honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior on Sunday. The commemorative concert is free and open to the public. It starts at 6 p.m.

You can watch the total lunar eclipse on Sunday night surrounded by nature. The celestial event is unique because it coincides with the first full super moon of the year. Obed Wild and Scenic River in Wartburg is hosting a viewing event where visitors will have the chance to look through one of the park’s powerful telescopes. The program and viewing begin at 9:30 p.m.

Make a trip to the Fort Loudon State Historic Area to walk along the ruins of the Tellico Blockhouse. The walk, which starts at 1 p.m., will be led by a  ranger. Registration costs $5.

The Stanford Eisenberg Knoxville Jewish Day School is performing ‘Willy Wonka Jr’ on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Clayton Performing Arts Center at Pellissippi State Community College.
