Ask Todd: Daylight hours are getting longer... but why?

Our days have been getting longer since December but the time of the sunrise hasn't changed...until today.

Our daylight hour have been getting longer since the winter solstice in December, but those extra minutes of sunlight have come during the evening hours. The sunrise hasn’t gotten any earlier....until today.

So why is this?

The earliest SUNSET of the year actually occurs in early December and the latest SUNRISE of the year is in early January.

This is because of the Earth’s rotation, its tilt and its position along its trip around the sun.

From now until the spring equinox on Wednesday, Mar. 20, our daylight will be extended by 2 hours and 9 minutes.

We will have sunlight for 4 hours and 38 minutes longer than we do right now by the time we reach the summer solstice on Friday, June 21.

So as of today, the early birds AND the night owls will get to see those extra minutes of daylight.
