DA: Man was on drugs when he caused I-40 wreck in 2016

John Christopher Chapman, 42, crashed into another vehicle on I-40 near the West Hills exit on Aug. 4, 2016.

A man who had methamphetamine in his system when he caused a crash on I-40 in 2016 has been convicted of driving under the influence and reckless endangerment.

John Christopher Chapman, 42, crashed into another vehicle on I-40 near the West Hills exit on Aug. 4, 2016.

Just before 9 a.m., Chapman was swerving between multiple lanes of traffic before he hit another vehicle, according to District Attorney Charme Allen's office.

When officers arrived, they administered field sobriety tests which he failed. After failing the tests, he agreed to have blood drawn. Those tests revealed the presence of methamphetamine, methadone, and alprazolam.

“Drugged driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving,” said DA Charme Allen.

Since this is a DUI first offense, Allen said Chapman faces a sentence of 11 months and 29 days with a minimum of 48 hours in jail.

His license will also be suspended for a year, and he must complete DUI school and pay a $350 fine.

Judge Steve Sword set the case for sentencing on Feb. 1. At the sentencing hearing, Judge Sword will determine how much of the sentence Chapman must serve in custody.
