Child playing with lighter started South Knoxville house fire, KFD says

Knoxville Fire crews responded to a home on Ingersoll Avenue around 12:21 p.m. When they arrived, investigators say they found two residents safely outside the structure, and smoke coming from the rear of the home.

A child playing with a cigarette lighter reportedly set their mother's bed on fire while she was napping Tuesday in South Knoxville.

Knoxville Fire crews responded to a home on Ingersoll Avenue around 12:21 p.m. When they arrived, investigators say they found two residents safely outside the structure, and smoke coming from the rear of the home.

Firefighters pushed their way through to a rear bedroom where the fire started and were able to put it out. According to KFD, a mother was home napping with one of her three children and told officials that she was woke by sounding smoke alarms and witnessed sparks shooting from a wall outlet in the room of origin.

After an investigation, the KFD Arson division determined the 5-year-old accidentally set the bed of the napping mother on fire while playing with a cigarette lighter. No injuries are reported and the American Red Cross will assist the family with their needs.

Investigators say the child will be enrolled in the juvenile fire starter program, where children are taught the danger of fires.
