Green Magnet Academy celebrates new outdoor classroom

Green Magnet Academy Community School is getting a new learning space that will allow students to take in knowledge outside a traditional classroom.

Green Magnet Academy Community School cut the ribbon on its new, alternative learning space Thursday morning.

Great Schools Partnership and Knox County Schools held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to thank donors for the new outdoor classroom at Green Magnet Academy on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m.

“This outdoor classroom provides a welcoming alternative learning space for teachers and students,” Green Magnet principal Jessica Holman said. “We are already using the classroom and everyone is excited about the hands-on learning opportunities.”

Stephanie Welch, president of Great Schools Partnership, said the classroom would offer students academic benefits.

“Studies show that children tend to have increased concentration and are more motivated, inspired and willing to learn when they are outdoors,” Welch said.

Green Magnet Academy is operated by the Great Schools Partnership along with Knox County Schools. It is one of 16 community schools operated by the organization.

LHP Capital, McNabb Modern Construction, Hoskins/Rose Achitechture + Design & Engingeering, Knox County Commissioner Randy Smith, St. John's Episcopal Church, Ford Wagner and Boy Scout Troop 757 all contributed to the creating the classroom.
