Bowls of puppies: Grainger Co. Humane Society seeking help after taking in 23 Chihuahuas

The shelter took in Chihuahua puppies and adult dogs, including one blind dog, on Friday, according to a Facebook post. If you're interested in adopting any of them, call 865-567-0832.

Grainger County — The Grainger County Humane Society took in 23 Chihuahuas on Friday after receiving a call from someone who had found themselves in what the shelter described as a "predicament," in a Facebook post.

The dogs were part of a group of more than 50 dogs and puppies in a situation where an owner became overwhelmed, the shelter said, after multiple litters were born.

They had done the best they could with they had, the post read, and the dogs were healthy and socialized and the house was generally clean.

"This is a work in progress," the post said. "After some baths, de-wormer, and some flea medication these babies are resting up. Some of them will require later vet care, such as dentals and eye exams (one blind dog). We would appreciate some any help with the future care of them."

The shelter is asking for donations to help get the dogs that care. You can donate here.

If you’re interested in adopting any of the dogs, you can call the shelter at 865-567-0832. The adults and older puppies will be ready to adopt in 2-3 weeks, the shelter said, and the little puppies will be ready around 6-8 weeks.

The shelter charges $100 for an adoption fee, which includes spay/neuter, de-worming, 2 vaccines (sometimes rabies depending on if the dog is old enough) and the dogs have been on heartworm prevention if they tested negative or are less than 6 months of age and have also been flea treated.

Not quite ready to commit? The shelter also said they need fosters. You can call 865-567-0832 or go online to fill out a foster application. The mother dog and litters have to stay where they are, the shelter said, but you can foster any of the adults and older puppies.
