Sweetwater school's "Independence Day" encourages kindergartners on first day

First-day jitters? High schoolers help shake them away for Sweetwater kindergartners.

Monroe County — Many students now have a few days, or weeks of the new school year under their belt.

For little ones who are just starting their school career, the first full day can be exciting, and nerve-wracking.

At Sweetwater Primary School in Monroe County, they believe encouragement can go a long way.

The school created an “Independence Day” for the kindergartners' first full day of school, which this year is on Monday, August 20.

Older students from Sweetwater High School come and line the sidewalks to cheer for and greet the young students as they enter.

The tradition, called “Independence Day,” helps give them role models to look up to, and shake away the first day jitters, Principal Darrin Nichols explained.

“It’s a wonderful event with schools combining to support our young kindergarten students," Nichols said. "This is a fun and exciting time with many smiles.”
