UT celebrates the Torchbearer's 50th birthday

According to UT, the Torchbearer—UT's official symbol—has been there since 1968. It greets visitors at the entrance to Circle Park.

University of Tennessee's Torchbearer turned 50 Thursday.

Students gathered at the Torchbearer Plaza for a celebration including free food and other freebies.

According to the university, the Torchbearer—UT’s official symbol—has been there since 1968. It greets visitors at the entrance to Circle Park.

It has borne silent witness to the university’s Volunteer Creed: “One that beareth a torch shadoweth oneself to give light to others.”

A natural-gas flame stays shining all the time and was designed to burn cleanly and safely in all weather conditions.

The statue is nine feet high and weighs 900 pounds, according to UT.
