Young Williams Animal Center worked with an independent rescuer to take in dozens of cats Wednesday.
The animal center said the rescuer was working to find the cats homes but decided to surrender all 40 of them to Young Williams so they could find homes sooner.
Even just a few rescues can be a lot to handle.
"It is really easy to become overwhelmed especially by cats because they can reproduce so well. One female cat can have up to three litters and in one season and they can have an average of six kittens in a litter, so you can start out with one female cat at the beginning of the year, and and wind up with end up with a least 20 by the end," Dr. Lisa Chassy said.
Veterinary staff at Young Williams are evaluating the cats. They could be available for adoption in the next few days for the recently-lowered fees.
