Zoo Knoxville's elephant turns 40 years old

Tonka the elephant turned 40 on Saturday.

Zoo Knoxville celebrated the birthday of Tonka the elephant on Saturday. Tonka turned 40 years old on St. Patrick's Day.

Becca Wyatt, Zoo Knoxville's lead elephant keeper said the celebration was fun, but also shed light on important wildlife issues.

"It's important to remember even though we're celebrating him today, that he's here for a reason, and he's advocating as an ambassador for his wild counterparts."

The celebration for Tonka included fruit for him to eat and demonstrations starring the elephant. Visitors also got to make birthday cards for the Elephant.

Tonka is known for being gentle and energetic. He has lived at Zoo Knoxville for the past 38 years.
