Another Oak Ridge middle schooler charged with making threats

The Oak Ridge police chief warned students that this is not the time to make jokes about violence.

Another Oak Ridge middle school student has been charged with making a threat at school.

For the second day in a row, Oak Ridge police were called to Robertsville Middle School on a report of a student threat.

A 12-year-old boy was taken out of class and to the principal's office when it was learned he threatened another student on social media.

Officers got a juvenile summons for charges of assault and harassment, and took the boy to appear before a juvenile court judge in Anderson County.

Oak Ridge Police Chief James Akagi was part of the school's morning announcements on Friday, after the arrest of a different student on Thursday.

In that case, a 13-year-old boy threatened to "shoot up the school." When questioned by officers, he said he was joking, but he was charged with harassment, disruption of a gathering, and felony false reporting.

“I took this opportunity to thank the students and staff who brought yesterday’s incident to our attention and reminded everyone now was not the time to make jokes about violence," Chief Akagi said. "Oak Ridge Schools and ORPD will continue in coordination with the District Attorney’s Office and Juvenile Court to vigorously investigate and take whatever measures necessary to ensure the safety of school students and staff, and today’s incident is a great example of our joint commitment to maintain public safety in our schools.”

There were a total of three student arrests at East Tennessee schools on Thursday. A Cocke County High student was charged on Friday with bringing a fake gun to school.
