With so many schools and businesses off work, organizers have asked for anyone with 4-wheel drive to step up and fill in for regular volunteers who may be held back by the weather.

"A lot of our volunteers are older so it's more difficult for them to go out because they're worried about falling and all that," Judith Pelot, Meals on Wheels manager, said. "That's why we really rely on 4 wheel drive volunteers, people who are off work and are just really wanting to help out, they don't have the opportunity to do that during their normal work day. "

Pelot said no matter what, Meals on Wheels recipients will be hearing from them even if it's just a call to check in. They still need volunteers for Thursday.

The Love Kitchen in Knoxville is also looking for volunteers in the coming week. You can find out more on their Facebook page.

Case workers at the Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee are busy making and answering calls and paying visits to the people they help serve.

In the meantime, they say you can help too. You can check on your elderly neighbors who might have trouble with their heat. You can make sure they have extra blankets and groceries. If you or someone you know might be in need of resources, folks at the CAC will try to connect you with the help you need.

"If they had a concern about someone, maybe they aren't answering the phone, they can always call our office and either we would send somebody or try to get ahold of somebody or send the police department out just to do a welfare check as well, CAC Senior Manager Misty Goodwin said.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office has its Senior Citizens Awareness Network or SCAN.

Volunteers with that program call and visit their recipients to make sure they're okay as well.
